Hoary marmots live near the tree line on slopes with grasses to eat and rocky areas for cover. They are native to North America. The hoary marmot is the largest North American ground squirrel. It is often nicknamed "the whistler" for its high-pitched warning issued to alert other members of the colony to possible danger. Hoary marmots are diurnal and herbivorous, subsisting on leaves, flowers, grasses, and sedges.
