Hippos inhabit rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps. Today hippos are found in the rivers and lakes of the northern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, north through to Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan, west to The Gambia, and south to South Africa. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud and emerge at dusk to graze on grasses. The hippo is among the most dangerous animals in the world due to its highly aggressive and unpredictable nature.
